A Night of Wine and New Friends

George received the invitation on a quiet afternoon. It was a cream envelope with golden letters. His name was written in beautiful handwriting. Inside, it said:
“Exclusive wine and food tasting: La Terraza del Mar.”

George didn’t know who sent the invitation, but it looked special. He liked wine, but he had never been to a wine pairing night before. He felt excited and a little nervous.

On the day of the event, he wore his favorite green shirt and blue jacket. He took a taxi to La Terraza del Mar, a beautiful place near the seaport. The terrace was on a high cliff with a view of the sea. The sky was orange and pink from the sunset. Soft music played in the background. Small lights hung above the tables, moving gently in the wind.

A woman in a red dress smiled when he arrived.
“Welcome, George,” she said kindly. “I’m Amalia, the sommelier tonight. Please, take a seat.”

George looked around and saw people talking and laughing. On every table, there were two or three wine glasses, and small plates with delicious food. The smell of bread, cheese, and the sea made him feel happy.

George sat down at a table with two chairs. A few minutes later, a young woman arrived. She had long brown hair and green eyes. She wore a light blue dress. She looked a little shy but smiled at him.

“Hi,” she said softly. “Is this seat free?”
“Yes, please sit,” George answered.
“My name is Mary,” she said as she sat down.
“I’m George. Nice to meet you.”

Mary explained that she also loved wine and food. She said it was her first time at a wine pairing event too. George felt less nervous. He was happy to meet someone friendly.

Amalia started the evening. She lifted a glass of white wine.
“This is Albariño from D.O.P. Rías Baixas,” she said. “It smells like lemon and flowers. Please, taste it with the oysters.”

George and Mary tasted the wine together. The flavor was fresh and soft. Then they tried the oyster with a little ginger. The mix of flavors was amazing — like the sea and the sun in one bite.
“Wow,” Mary said. “This is delicious.”
George laughed. “Yes, I’ve never tasted anything like this.”

The next wine was a Monastrell light rosé from D.O. Alicante with mango ceviche. The sweet mango and fresh fish worked perfectly with the wine. Mary closed her eyes and smiled.
“I think I’m in love,” she joked. George laughed again.

As the night continued, they tasted a strong red wine — a red wine from the D.O. Ribera del Duero, made with Tinto Fino grapes and matured for 14 months in French oak barrels — served with a sirloin steak with mushroom sauce. Then a sweet dessert, a Fondillón wine, with lavender mousse. Each flavor was different, but all of them were wonderful.

Between each tasting, George and Mary talked more. She told him she worked as a graphic designer and loved to travel. He told her about his small garden at home and his dream of visiting vineyards in Spain.
“You know,” Mary said, “I always wanted to learn more about wine. But it’s nicer to share it with someone.”
George agreed. “Yes, wine is better when you are not alone.”

Amalia walked to their table with a bottle of sparkling wine. It was a long-aged sparkling wine from the Corpinnat appellation, made with Xarel·lo, Macabeo, Parellada, and Chardonnay grapes.
“This is our last wine of the evening,” she said. “It’s a special one. Please enjoy it with chocolate truffles.”

George lifted his glass. “To new experiences,” he said.
Mary touched his glass with hers. “And new friends,” she added.

The sound of the glasses was soft, like the ocean breeze. The sparkling wine tasted light and joyful. The chocolate melted slowly on their tongues. It was a perfect moment.

After the tasting, many guests left. George and Mary stayed a little longer on the terrace. The moon was full, and the ocean was quiet.
“This place is beautiful,” Mary said.
“Yes,” George said. “I’m glad I came tonight.”
Mary smiled at him. “Me too. Maybe we can come to another wine event together.”

George felt warm inside — not just from the wine, but from this new connection.
“I’d like that,” he said.

They exchanged phone numbers before leaving. As George walked home, he thought about the night: the ocean, the flavors, the lights, and Mary’s smile. The invitation was a surprise, but it gave him something more than good wine — it gave him a new friend and a memory he would not forget.
