Before Becoming a Sommelier: George’s Unexpected Start in Barcelona

Welcome to this blog! This is a place where wine is the main character. Every glass is the start of a small adventure.

This blog exists for a simple reason: the best wine stories are not just about the taste or the smell. They are about the people, the friendships, and the unexpected good moments that happen when a bottle is open. To tell these stories, we have a friend: George.

George is not a real person, but he is like many of us. He is the friend who always chooses the wine. He is the professional who learned quickly. He is the wine lover who remembers the year of his first great lesson. Through George's eyes, we will read chapters. These chapters put wine in many different places—from a dinner table to a fast trip. Friends and curious people are always with George.

Like many passionate people, George’s story with wine started without a big plan. Many years ago, he was working in catering and restaurants in Barcelona. In the beginning, wine was just part of his job. He had to serve it at weddings, big events, and in the restaurant. It was just a drink.

But slowly, George started to see something more. Behind the simple job of serving, he found a whole new world. Wine was more than just red or white. It was a world of smells, flavors, and histories. He wanted to know more. He felt a new passion. He started to look at the bottles for a longer time. He wanted to understand the names on the labels.

One day, a very important person came into his life: Christopher. Christopher was a big expert in wine. He was the Food and Beverage Manager at a very important hotel restaurant. Christopher was also a member of the Catalan Sommeliers Association.

Almost every night, when George finished his work, Christopher was still in his office. George started to sit and listen to him. Christopher was happy to explain many things to George. He talked about grapes, countries, and old traditions. Christopher became George’s first wine teacher. He opened the door to the world of wine for George.

George remembers the restaurant cellar very well. For George, this cellar was like a treasure box full of wine diamonds. Most of the bottles were samples. The wineries sent them directly to Christopher. Why? Because Christopher’s professional opinion was very important and respected. Wineries sent their new wines and future projects to him.

George was very lucky because he was the assistant maître d’ and he helped manage the cellar. This was a big privilege. It meant he could discover those wines first. This work opened his eyes to the real world of wine production and high-level taste. He learned that behind every bottle there is a family, a year of weather, and a big effort. He learned that expensive wine is not just expensive; it is a story of hard work.

Sometimes, George and Christopher would open a special sample. Christopher would explain why a wine was good or bad. He taught George to smell and taste with attention. He said: "George, wine is not only for drinking; it is for understanding."

Christopher also invited George to join the Sommeliers Association. This was a big change for George. Thanks to Christopher, George started to go to wine tastings with other professionals. These were formal events. He met many people who loved wine as much as he did.

Then came a very special moment: George participated in the "Best Sommelier of Catalonia" competition. This was the first time George was in such a big event. He was in a big room with many young sommeliers. But also, there were very big professionals, people at the highest level.

George felt a little scared, but very happy. He was new, of course, and did not have much experience. But he was in the same room as the champions! They were all together, sharing their knowledge and their passion. It was a moment of connection. George felt part of something bigger, like a big family. He will never forget this day! (He still laughs when he thinks about it.

Looking back, George knows that these first moments shaped his path. The lessons from his first teacher were always the same: wine is a journey, not a final destination. You must always learn. You must always try new things.

Wine has given George many good things: knowledge, strong friendships, and unforgettable moments.

And now, through this blog and through George, we will share these experiences. One uncorking, one simple story at a time.

  1. What an inspiring start to your journey as a sommelier!

Your storytelling was so vivid that I could practically picture myself in the room as you described it. I can only imagine how intimidating your first 'Best Sommelier of Catalonia' event must have felt, especially as you were just stepping into the world of wine and surrounded yourself with expert sommeliers. But as the saying goes, surround yourself with people who excel at what you are trying to master as it is the fastest way to grow!

On a side note, reading your story has sparked a craving for a glass of wine. I think I will pour one now while I eagerly await the second chapter of your journey!
